“The Innovative Project Award honors projects that break the mold of standard building construction, design, and operations. The projects in question exemplify innovation and astute practices that reflect the goals of the U.S. Green Building Council of West Michigan (USGBC-WM)’s programs. The Innovative Project winner this year was chosen in a close vote between our Board of Directors and Staff. The USGBC-WM is excited to announce Western Michigan University as our first-place Innovative Project winner for their Dunbar Hall Renovation project.
Dunbar Hall, a cornerstone of Western Michigan University‘s campus, has undergone a significant transformation. Originally constructed in 1971, the building’s Brutalist design, characterized by long, dark corridors and small classrooms, no longer met the needs of today’s students. To address this, TowerPinkster, in collaboration with HGA, embarked on a comprehensive renovation. The project involved stripping the structure to its core, a striking glass addition, and the inclusion of modern learning spaces. The goal was to create a dynamic, sustainable environment that fosters collaboration and innovation. . .”
